Asphalt Paving Awards

Our industry and agency awards are an opportunity to recognize successful projects throughout Minnesota. These asphalt pavement projects show exceptional quality and paving best practices from industry and agencies.

The projects are awarded at MAPA’s Annual Asphalt Conference at the beginning of December each year where the agency and contractor will be accepting the award for the projects.

The rating panel consists of various stakeholders from industry, MnDOT materials, MnDOT Construction, and State Aid.

The paving awards panel travels to each project submission to review based on the following criteria:

  1. Rideability: The rideability will be determined by the Rating Panel.
  2. Joints: Joints should be rated on alignment, smoothness, general appearance, tightness, and any other items which might be pertinent to the construction of a joint.
  3. General Appearance: This item should be rated to cover only those items included in the Contract which would affect the general appearance of the project. Some items which should be considered are: alignment of edges, surface texture, and job cleanup.
  4. Complexity of Project: The complexity of the job should be recognized as an important factor. Items that affect the complexity would be the number of intersections, the number of bridges, medians, turn lanes, manholes, catch basins, the volume of traffic, interchanges, crossovers, etc. The Rating Panel will assign the value of this item.
  5. Design Compliance (all Categories): Projects submitted will be accepted or rejected based on a discussion of job records with the District Materials Office, Project Personnel, and the Bituminous Office. Projects must substantially completed.
