Best Practices Memo

The MnDOT Bituminous Office and MAPA collaborated on this memo to remind people of Best Practices in Quality Management for the 2017 construction season. More information about specific laboratory testing requirements can be found in the MnDOT Lab Manual.

Asphalt Ride Quality Guideline Memo

Ride specification, 2399, Pavement Surface Smoothness, requires pavement Smoothness and Areas of Localized Roughness (ALR) be measured by MRI (Mean Roughness Index). However, the specification does not contain guidance for selecting the appropriate “ride equation” for pavement Smoothness evaluation. Therefore, the following guideline from MnDOT should be used to determine which equation is appropriate. Also, included in this memo are guidelines for selecting Percent Ride Improvement on 1-lift overlays. The designer should use their judgment or consult the Bituminous Office for other construction types not covered in this memo.

National Updates

NAPA Warm Mix/Recycle Survey

NAPA needs your help in gathering data for the 2016 construction season survey on the use of recycled materials and warm-mix asphalt. Visit www.surveymonkey.com/r/RMWMASurvey2016 to provide information about the use of recycled materials and WMA at your plants in Minnesota. NAPA would like to have as many responses as possible by May 31 with participation from all 50 states and the U.S. territories. It is recommended that respondents download a printed version of the survey from www.goaspha.lt/2016NAPA-FHWASurvey to ensure that all relevant data is on hand before beginning the process. Information provided is kept fully confidential and only reported at the state-level if more than three producers in the state participate. If you have any questions, contact NAPA Director of Engineering, Kent Hansen. All MAPA members are encouraged to fill out this survey.
