DOL Issues Final Overtime Rule

The Department of Labor announced its long-awaited final regulations, which are poised to greatly expand the number of employees who are eligible for overtime pay. This rule will go into effect on December 1, 2016. Click here to read more.

The consequences of OSHA’s reporting final rule

On May 11, 2016, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration issued a new final rule governing the tracking and reporting of workplace injuries and illnesses. The new rule, which takes effect, in part, on July 1, 2017, is expected to have significant consequences for employers going far beyond the new reporting obligations set forth in the rule.Click here to read the full article.

Critical Amendments to Minnesota’s Prompt Payment and Retainage Laws

The Minnesota legislature recently passed a bill significantly amending Minnesota’s prompt payment statute. The revised statute specifically authorizes contractors and subcontractors of any tier to stop work if they are not paid within 10 days after an undisputed payment is due. It also limits retainage to 5 percent on all construction projects in Minnesota. Signed into law by Governor Dayton on May 19, the changes will apply to all building and construction contracts executed after August 1, 2016. Click here to read more.

MPCA: Industrial stormwater sampling requirements – what’s next?

The current general permit was issued April 2015, and all permittees were required to “restart” sampling quarterly, for four quarters to start, starting July 2015.  New applicants started sampling the next full calendar quarter after receiving permit coverage. Click here to read more.

Bituminous Roadways

Congratulations to Bituminous Roadways on their 70th anniversary! The open house was held on May 20th at the Mendota Heights office and had many attendees. The event featured a great american BBQ dinner, ice cold beverages, live music, family fun, prizes and networking.

Duininck, Inc.

On May 26, 2016 Duininck, Inc. announced the acquisition of the asphalt related assets of McLaughlin & Schulz, Inc. in a deal that concluded on Tuesday, May 10. The acquisition allows Duininck, Inc. to expand their capabilities in the region.

McLaughlin & Schulz, Inc. was founded in 1939 by Frank McLaughlin.

Park Construction

Park Construction Company recently paved the U.S. Bank Stadium floor prior to the placement of the turf. The mix used on this projects was SPWEB440B on the first lift and SPWEA440B on the wear course. The mix came from Commercial Asphalt’s Burnsville plant. The tolerance on this project was 1/8th inch in 10 feet so this project used 3D paving with the help of Ziegler CAT and Caterpillar Paving Products to achieve the tighter smoothness requirement. The U.S. Bank Stadium is scheduled to open this summer.

Stinson Leonard Street

After nearly three decades at the Fifth Street Towers in downtown Minneapolis, the law firm announced it will relocate its headquarters and 400 workers to the 29-story Class A office building on the northwest quadrant of South Sixth Street and Nicollet Mall.
The firm has signed a 16-year lease for 105,000 square feet on three full floors and part of a fourth at the building, managing partner Mark Hinderks said in an interview Thursday.
Stinson Leonard Street will make the two-block move in fall 2017 to the tower, named after its address at 50 S. Sixth St. Click here to read more.

Stonebrooke

Stonebrooke Engineering, Inc. (Stonebrooke) is pleased to announce that Mike Hulstein has joined the firm’s Minneapolis, Minnesota office as a Bridge Design Engineer. Prior to joining Stonebrooke, Hulstein worked for Jackson County Public Works Department where he was an intern for two summers during college. In his new role, he will focus primarily on bridge replacement plans, bridge design calculations, and bridge load ratings. Hulstein holds a BS in Civil Engineering from Minnesota State University-Mankato.
